Peanut Butter
Bicycling Review
Issue: Jun 2007
Editorial Review
Santa Cruz's line of organic peanut butters would make George Washington Carver proud
Last year I turned 40, and so far all that stuff about getting older than you hear but absolutely deny will happen to you, such as slower recovery and tougher weight loss, seem to be true. Yeah, really, it's great. In an attempt to fight back, I've pledged to include more foods with greater nutritional density into my diet, and alongside Fage 2 percent greek yogurt (fageusa.com), my new favorite food, is peanut butter. Santa Cruz Organic Creamy Peanut Butter is natural-the ingredients list includes roasted peanuts, peanut oil and salt-which means, of course, that you have to stir the oil in before you can use it, usually a messy process. But in this case, it mixed in easily and was well worth the effort: You can taste the peanuts, it's super creamy and somehow even light. There's also a dark-roast option, which I haven't tried, as well as chunky versions. Two tablespoons contain 210 calories and 8 grams of protein, making it a great pre- or post-workout snack on whole-grain toast-I've been having some mid-morning and have noticed that it fuels me for my lunchtime ride and prevents a late-morning energy slump. I'm leaving the Skippy for my kids; this stuff is all for me.
